Civil Service Remains Backbone of Governance, Says Sheriff Oborevwori .... Says Civil Service Must Embrace AI
"The civil service plays a critical role in translating government policies into practical actions and sustaining effective service delivery, adding that its efficiency depends largely on strong institutions, competent personnel and a work culture anchored on professionalism, integrity and accountability." Oborevwori
Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has described the civil service as the backbone of governance, stressing the need for continuous reforms, technological advancement and professional capacity development to strengthen public service delivery.
Oborevwori stated this while declaring open the 45th National Council of the Civil Service Commissions of the Federation in Asaba, Delta State.
The governor, who was represented by his Deputy, Sir Monday Onyeme, said the theme of the conference, “Towards a Future-Ready Civil Service,” was timely, given the changing demands of governance and the growing influence of technology, particularly Artificial Intelligence (AI), on public administration.
He noted that the civil service plays a critical role in translating government policies into practical actions and sustaining effective service delivery, adding that its efficiency depends largely on strong institutions, competent personnel and a work culture anchored on professionalism, integrity and accountability.
The governor emphasised that the changing technological landscape requires the civil service to embrace modernisation, acquire relevant skills and adopt innovative approaches to remain responsive to emerging governance challenges.
He said the Delta State Government, through its MORE Agenda, was investing in capacity building, digital transformation and workers' welfare as part of efforts to strengthen the state's public service and improve institutional efficiency.
Oborevwori expressed confidence that the council would provide an important platform for stakeholders to exchange ideas, examine emerging challenges and develop strategies for building a more efficient, innovative and future-ready civil service.
He wished participants fruitful deliberations and urged them to make the most of the gathering to advance reforms that would enhance the effectiveness of civil service institutions across the country.
